3 weeks to go!

Filed under: Uncategorized — George Fowler @ 10:23 am

Believe it, or not, we are only three weeks away from the 1st Arkansas Libraries Collaboration UnConference! Things are coming together rather nicely.

We have the location ready – Bailey Library at Hendrix College, with the break-out rooms mapped and prepped. We have the equipment (laptops, webcams, and microphones for streaming to ustream). We just got confirmation on wireless availability for all in the libraries so that we can tweet, blog, or otherwise contribute to the CuC with other kewl Web 2.0 tools.

I think it is an appropriate time to begin preparing some intial topics to discuss. This will provide a rough idea of what people are thinking about to begin the planning session at 9am on the 31st. To that end, please comment to this posting any/all topics you would like to discuss at the CuC.

Thanks and see you all soon!

George

  1. I’d be interested in discussing the use of wikis as a sort of “intranet” for library personnel. Is anyone out there currently using this approach? UCA currently has an intranet, but it is clunky and difficult to navigate. I’ve heard lots of different things when it comes to the success of facebook pages and twitter accounts to help promote the library and its resources and would love to hear what any AR libraries are doing in this area. I am also interested in how academic libraries are reaching out to their online and distance learning students. What is being done to support their research needs?

Thanks so much for putting this together. I am really looking forward to it! Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help set up or facilitate the conference in anyway.

  2. Possible topics — e-serials management (the niity-gritty stuff), Facebook–both how libraries are handling users on Facebook all the time and if libraries should have a presence on Facebook, remote reference, basic computer trouble-shooting.

  3. Is anyone using del.icio.us for website recommendations? And I’d love to hear about others’ experience with IM reference.

  4. Hello–I’d be interested in hearing from folks working with digitization and non-MARC metadata.

  5. Our biggest issues right now are
1.being sure we pass the standards for library support of online learning (this seems to be leading to more active library presence on our course management system)
    2. Thinking of upgrading to TLC LS2 PAC – would be interested in knowing other’s take on that
    3. how to market and encourage use of online databases and ebooks
    4. reference – are you going electronic or still print?

  6. I’d also like to get a conversation going about screencasting and the various available software packages that are available for building online tutorials (Jing vs. Camtasia vs. Captivate). I’d love to know what others are using and how they are employing this technology within their bibliographic instruction services.

  7. I’d be interested in what are the best practices when it comes to managing a library computer lab. This can deal with (but is not limited to): Computer maintenance, computer security, coordination with the campus IT department, privacy issues, legal issues (especially for those who get public funds), etc.

  8. I am interested in brainstorming about a statewide digital repository of resources for Arkansas like the Online Archive of California http://www.oac.cdlib.org/ or like Oaister http://www.oaister.org/.

  9. Christopher,

I’m bringing a presentation about a grant proposal that addresses that issue. Hopefully I’ll be one of the ones “voted” to speak! I figured that the Butler Center would be interested in something like that too.
